University of Manitoba Opens State-of-the-Art Digitization Centre to Preserve History

October 26, 2025

The University of Manitoba has officially opened its new UM Libraries Digitization Centre, a cutting-edge facility dedicated to preserving the university’s vast archives and Manitoba’s cultural heritage for future generations.
The centre, located within the Elizabeth Dafoe Library, is now accepting digitization requests from students, faculty, staff, and members of the public. It can handle a diverse range of materials — including books, manuscripts, photographs, slides, maps, architectural drawings, and even film formats such as 8 mm, Super 8, and 35 mm.

“This new facility allows us to protect and share invaluable materials that tell Manitoba’s story,” said Sarah Clark, Associate University Librarian for Archives and Special Collections. “Digitization helps us make these resources more accessible while safeguarding originals that are fragile or rare.”

The launch coincides with the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, observed annually on October 27, highlighting the importance of preserving historical recordings and films before they deteriorate.

University-affiliated users can submit small digitization requests free of charge, while larger or external projects may involve service fees. The library is also accepting donations of vintage playback equipment to support its growing media preservation program.

“This initiative bridges the gap between the past and the digital future,” said Clark. “Every reel of film or handwritten diary we digitize brings Manitoba’s collective memory one step closer to being shared with the world.”

Requests and project proposals can be submitted through the UM Libraries website.
