Cumilla’s historic Rammala Library, established in 1912, is set to undergo a major preservation and digitization initiative to protect its rare collection of manuscripts and books. The library houses around 25,000 books and more than 8,500 manuscripts, including over 6,000 Sanskrit works covering philosophy, Vedas, literature, folk traditions, medicine, astrology, and regional history.
Managed by the Mahesh Charitable Trust, the institution also features a small museum displaying ancient coins, pottery, and sculptures. Experts warn that the invaluable manuscripts face threats from humidity, insects, and lack of modern preservation facilities. Discussions are underway with the Ministry of Culture to begin scientific preservation and digital archiving to ensure long-term protection and accessibility for researchers and the public.
Officials emphasized that digitization will help safeguard Bangladesh’s rich literary and cultural heritage while making it more accessible to future generations.
