Job Title: School Librarian
Job Overview: As a School Librarian, you play a pivotal role in fostering a love for books and reading among
the students.
Main Roles & Responsibilities: Specific duties and responsibilities of the school Librarian will include as
follows, but will not be limited to the following
1. Library Management:
 Organize and maintain the school library collection, including books, digital resources, and
multimedia materials.
 Develop cataloguing systems and ensure easy access to library resources for students and staff.
 Upgrade and purchase books according to curriculum requirements and children's interests in all
the genres.
 Issue and track books for students, monitoring circulation and ensuring timely return.
 Issue books to staff members and maintain records pertaining to the same.

2. Library Etiquette and Organization:
 Enforce library rules and etiquette to maintain a conducive environment for learning.
 Organize books based on grade levels and colour code them for easy access.
 Conduct regular stock checks and maintain accurate data entry for book accession and shelving.

3. Promoting Literacy and Reading Activities:
 Plan and implement reading programs and activities to encourage reading habits among students
and staff (including ensuring availability of books for the DEAR program).
 Collaborate with teachers to integrate library resources into curriculum and promote literacy across
subjects.
 Teach students research skills, including how to effectively use databases, search engines, and
other information sources.
 Read and tell stories for students from kindergarten to Grade 4, introducing various components of
books during sessions.
 Facilitate discussions based on storytelling sessions to enhance comprehension and critical thinking
skills.
 Introduce reading activities like pair reading and group reading, ensuring availability of multiple
copies of books.
 Guide and support staff members in accessing books from the library for professional and personal
needs and requirements.

 Manage attractive display of books and routinely change the same, keeping with prevalent topics of
nation-wide or global areas of interest.
 Make annual subscriptions of newspapers, magazines and journals

4. Student Engagement and Support:
• Identify students with varying levels of reading ability and provide suitable reading materials.
• Maintain discipline and ensure students are occupied throughout library periods.
• Reward outstanding readers at the end of the year with a book and lead the reward and
recognition committee.
 Assist students and teachers in finding relevant information for assignments, projects, and personal
interests.
 Offer support in accessing and using reference materials, both physical and digital.

5. Technology Integration:
 Stay updated on emerging technologies relevant to libraries and education.
 Integrate technology tools and digital resources into library services and instruction to enhance
learning experiences.
6. Other Important tasks:
 Address student behavioural issues promptly and consistently while promoting respect and
responsibility among students.
 Participate in examination invigilation duties for internal exams and ASSET exams as per
requirements.
 Attend staff meetings, professional development workshops, and educational conferences.
 Collaborate with colleagues and serve on committees to improve the overall school
environment and programs.
 Participate in other duties such as lunch break, bus, and departure supervision, as well as
substitution duties as needed.

Qualifications / Requirements:
 Passion for reading and competent knowledge about books
 Excellent language skills
 A Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Library Science or Information Management is a plus
 Previous experience as a librarian
 Experience using computers and working with electronic databases
 Familiarity with information management systems

 Strong organizational skills
 Effective communication

  •  Ability to multitask
