The School Education Department in Tiruppur district, Tamil Nadu, has launched an initiative to foster reading habits among students in government schools from Classes 6 to 10.
The core of the initiative is the mapping of government schools to their nearest public libraries in several blocks, including Dharapuram, Tiruppur North, South, Pongalur, Madathukulam, Uthukuli, and Udumalpet.
The program mandates the following activities to promote reading:
Monthly Library Visits: Schools are instructed to take students to the nearest public library once every month.
School-Level Competitions: After the visits, schools must conduct competitions based on the library books, such as speech contests, quizzes, and discussions.
Block-Level Competitions: These competitions are to be organized at the block level every first week of the month.
Tiruppur district's library network includes the District Central Library (with 11 lakh books), 75 branch libraries (with about 50,000 books each), and an equal number of village libraries (with over 15,000 books each).
